  • T.A. 3021 – The Last Ship sails from Middle-earth: Elrond, Frodo, Bilbo, Galadriel, and Gandalf leave for the Undying Lands.

Other Events of the Third Age

  • T.A. 1Sauron is defeated in battle by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, led by Gil-galad and Elendil.
  • T.A. 861 – The Kingdom of Arnor is divided into Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur after the death of King Eärendur.
  • T.A. 1050 – The Shadow falls on Greenwood, later called Mirkwood. The Witch-king establishes the realm of Angmar in the north.
  • T.A. 1409 – The forces of Angmar complete their control of Rhudaur and overrun Cardolan; Weathertop and Amon Sûl are destroyed.
  • T.A. 1974Angmar destroys Arthedain, capturing Fornost; King Arvedui flees and later drowns in the Icebay of Forochel.
  • T.A. 1975 – The Battle of Fornost: Gondor and the Elves defeat Angmar; the Witch-king flees to Mordor.

    • Begins after Sauron’s defeat at the end of the Second Age.
    • Marked by the decline of the Dúnedain, the weakening of the Elves, and the return of Sauron.
    • Ends with the War of the Ring, the destruction of the One Ring, and the ascension of Aragorn as King Elessar.
  5. Fourth AgeThe Age of Men
    • Begins with the crowning of King Aragorn II Elessar.
    – Elves continue leaving Middle-earth, and Men become the dominant race.
